Great Plains Food Bank receives $10,000 Red Nose Day Fund

FARGO, N.D. – The Great Plains Food Bank has received a $10,000 grant from the Red Nose Day Fund that will immediately help children in need across North Dakota and western Minnesota.

Specifically, the $10,000 grant, which will supply funding to the Great Plains Food Bank through May 31, will be divided among three childhood hunger programs – the BackPack Program, School Pantry Program and Youth Summer Meals Program.

“We thank the Red Nose Day Fund for all that they do both locally and across the nation to fight poverty and hunger among children.” Great Plains Food Bank CEO Steve Sellent said. “This grant will have a great impact in helping ensure that children are being fed and are arriving at school each day equipped to learn and grow. These funds are crucial in our work to end childhood hunger.”

Across North Dakota, there are 33,000 children that qualify for and greatly rely on free and reduced cost school lunches. Many of those children struggle with not enough to eat on the weekends and over the summer months.

The BackPack Program provides meals and snacks to help children get through the weekend, Youth Summer Meals offers a lunch option during the summer months and the School Pantry Program offers a resources for food assistance directly inside the school.

In the last three years, Red Nose Day has raised more than $100 million to help raise children out of poverty and has served more than 32 million meals to children throughout the U.S.
